KOMBUCHA STUDIES

2023 -

Starting in November 2023, over the course of about a year, I created several sheets of fabric using SCOBYs (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast) generated during the kombucha brewing process.

In kombucha, yeast and bacteria are distinct microorganisms that exist in a competitive yet symbiotic relationship. Through this symbiosis, they form a dense structure called SCOBY, which drives the fermentation process. While engaging in the process of creating a material called "Kombucha Leather," I found myself suddenly aware of the physical pain multiplying within my body and, at the same time, reflecting on the gradual fortification of my mind. I came to realize that the process of the SCOBY growing and transforming into a material closely mirrored my own everyday experiences.

SCOBYs must avoid direct sunlight and cannot grow properly in overly hot or cold environments. Their characteristic odor can permeate the house, and while they grow rapidly in autumn, their growth slows in winter. This reminded me of myself: highly sensitive to my surroundings, expending all my energy in spring, summer, and autumn to accomplish daily tasks, only to recharge during the winter.

Much like SCOBYs, we too are undergoing the dynamic, living process of fermentation every single day.
